Running may be more than barefoot or wearing.

Running is more likely to cause joint strain, resulting in knee, hip and ankle injuries.

The findings are published in the Journal of physiotherapy and rehabilitation of the American Institute of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Xinhua reported on January 15th that American researchers found that running on running shoes in the market may be more likely to cause joint strain than running barefoot or wearing high heels, causing injuries to the knees, hips and ankle joints.

The findings are published in the American Journal of physical therapy and rehabilitation (Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation).

In January 12th, the website quoted Kathy Kerrigan, Professor of physical therapy and rehabilitation at University of Virginia, as a research director. There is no doubt that exercise is good for our health, but running or walking will increase stress on some joints.

knee

Cartilage injury in the hip and ankle causes osteoarthritis, causing direct friction between bones causing pain.

She said people should try their best to reduce the stress on the joints so as to avoid osteoarthritis.

Previous studies by Kerrigan and colleagues showed that women wearing high-heeled shoes would cause knee joints to bear more stress than bare feet and easily lead to joint injuries.

Their latest research finds that running shoes are more likely to cause joint injuries than high-heeled shoes, because the cushions in running shoes have increased elasticity and improved wearing comfort, but also raised the height of shoes.

Running test

The researchers selected 37 women and 31 men as subjects.

These people are used to running fitness and running at least 24 kilometers a week.

In the lab, the test subjects ran barefoot on the treadmill, then put on running shoes and ran again.

The researchers mark their knees, hips and ankle joints so that they can be easily identified in cameras, so as to observe joint movements.

At the same time, the treadmill stress test board measures the weight and direction of the weight exerted by the runner's weight on the joint, and ultimately calculates the torque and torsion force of the joints of each runner during the single leg exertion.

The result surprised the researchers. When running shoes, the torque of knees, hips and ankles increased significantly, which was 38% more than that of barefoot running.

Women wear high-heeled shoes with a torque of about 20% to 26% higher than barefoot.

Comfort first

According to this study, we should be barefoot when we run.

Christopher MacDougall, an American writer, advocated barefoot running in his bestseller, "running for life".

In fact, this way of running is really popular.

But researchers do not agree.

Kerrigan said that even bare feet run depends on the material.

If barefoot running on asphalt or concrete rigid pavement, joint pressure can not be buffered properly, the body has to make greater efforts to maintain the balance of power, eventually leading to the whole body fatigue and wear.

Although running shoes are not conducive to knee joints in some aspects, such as arch pads, running shoes do protect the feet and prevent tibial periostitis and other injuries.

Therefore, he suggested: "running shoes or ordinary shoes, people should choose shoes that feel the most comfortable when they run."
